Last week I told you a story about our family trip to Germany, to Legoland. It was our first long trip by car and I didn’t want to be too bored, so I chose to crochet instead. Luckily lots of skeins in different colors were with me, and new blanket design was born. I know I promised you the pattern soon, but we’ve just arrived to Belarus to see my parents, and life became a bit chaotic. I will share free pattern with you very soon. But so far I thought you would like to have a look at a completed blanket.
I truly enjoyed working on this blanket and playing with colors. I have discovered a new (to me) crochet technique recently. It allows to work from charts, as in corner-to-corner for example. So in fact it opens endless designing possibilities, as you can create your own chart, and your own unique blanket.
I don’t know a name for this technique. You were trying to guess what it is, and it does look like interlocking crochet, indeed. But I think it’s not. I believe the idea of interlocking crochet is to create reversible fabric with same pattern on both sides but in different order of colors. And this blanket has right and wrong side, so I think it’s not interlocking. It reminds me of an overlay crochet with just a small difference. Chain stitches are involved here, and fabric is not stiff at all. And you can crochet from chart. Well, you will see everything yourself when the pattern is finally released (and I hope it won’t take long).
I didn’t have much time to finish the sample, so I went for a baby size, and my blanket is approx. 84 cm x 104 cm (33” x 41”). The blanket consists of several geometrical stripes and dividers, and can be made in any size (width or length).
I used Colour Crafter yarn by Scheepjes* (DK weight) in 7 colors, but you can of course choose more or less shades. I would recommend taking soft yarn in solid shades for this blanket.

SPsc (single crochet spike stitch) The spike stitch is almost the same as single crochet, but placed one round below the working round and drawn up to the height of a working round. Insert a hook in indicated st, draw up a loop to the height of the stitches at a working rnd, yo, pull through both lps on hook. Skip the sc of current rnd which is located behind a SPsc just made. • Nya Mosaic Blanket is a repeating pattern of geometric stripes (chart) and dividers. Each geometric stripe is made with yarn in two shades.
• You can either follow the chart or written instructions.
• Ch1/ch2 in the beginning of each row doesn’t count as a st. So first sc/dc of each row is made in first stitch of previous row.
• All dc’s are made in sts of same color from 2 rows below – always in front of work.
• Change color on the last yarn over when there are still 2 loops on hook. Yarn is changed after every 2 rows.
Opmerkingen bij het patroon:
Nya Mosaic Blanket is een herhalend patroon van geometrische banen (vlg. schema) en tussen strepen. Elke geometrische baan is gehaakt met 2 kleuren garen.
• Je kan zowel het getekende schema volgen als de geschreven uitleg
• 1 losse/2 lossen aan het begin van elke toer telt niet als een steek. Dus de eerste vaste/stokje van elke toer haak je in de eerste steek van de vorige toer.
•Alle stokjes worden gehaakt in de steken met dezelfde kleur van 2 toeren lager – altijd aan de voorkant van het werk.
•Wissel van kleur bij de laatste omslag als je nog 2 lussen op de naald hebt. Je wisselt na elke 2 toeren. Zie foto:
• Chart is read from bottom to top. Each row in chart represents two rows of same color. Rows on the RS (1,2,3, etc.) are read from right to left, and rows on WS (1a, 2a, 3a, etc.) are read back across from left to right. The first square of each row shows which color is used for 2 rows (1-1a, 2-2a, 3-3a, etc.)
• Each square of the chart shows 1 stitch or 1 skipped stitch. When squares of different colors appear in the row – they should be skipped. So instead of working them – make a number of ch (always 1 ch more than a number of skipped sts – to prevent your work from pulling) and skip needed sts. So for 1 skipped st you will ch2, for 2 skipped sts – ch3, for 3 skipped sts – ch4, etc.
• On next row on RS when you will crochet with different color – you will make dc in these skipped sts from two rows below. Dc’s are always made in front of your work, in front of chains of previous rows, so spacs are always skipped. (see pics below).
Lezen van het schema:
• Het schema lees je van onder naar boven. Elke rij is 2 toeren van dezelfde kleur. Toeren aan de goede kant (1,2,3 etc.) lees je van rechts naar links, de toeren aan de verkeerde kant (1a,2a,3a etc.) lees je van links naar rechts. Het eerste vierkantje van elke rij laat zien welke kleur wordt gebruikt voor de 2 toeren (1-1a, 2-2a, 3-3a, etc.)
• Elk vierkantje van het schema laat 1 steek of 1 overgeslagen steek zien. Als er vierkantjes van de tweede kleur voorkomen in de rij, dan moet je deze overslaan. In plaats van een vaste haak je dan lossen, haak altijd 1 losse meer dan het aantal overgeslagen steken, dit om trekken van je werk te voorkomen. Dus voor 1 overgeslagen steek haak je 3 lossen, voor 2 overgeslagen steken haak je er 3. Voor 3 overgeslagen steken haak je er 4, etc.
• Bij de volgende rij aan de goede kant, als je dus met de andere kleur begint, haak je stokjes in de overgeslagen steken van 2 toeren eronder. Stokjes worden altijd aan de voorkant van het werk gehaakt, voor de lossen langs, dus die worden dan altijd overgeslagen. Zie de afbeeldingen hieronder:
Following chart: start with “Begin” section, then repeat “One Repeat” six or more times (for a larger blanket), and finish with “End” section.
Volgen van het schema: start bij “Begin”, herhaal dan “One Repeat” zes (of meer keren voor een bredere deken) en eindig met “End” .
• When working on RS it is very important to skip correct number of stitches. The mistakes can appear when you finish dc, make several chains and then skip wrong number of stitches (or don’t skip them at all) behind or just next to dc. (pic 1)
• When working on WS be sure to make sc in EVERY st without missing any. Sometimes dc can be “hiding”, so be sure not to miss them. (pics 2-3)
Veel voorkomende fouten:
• Als je aan de voorkant werkt is het heel belangrijk dat je het juiste aantal steken overslaat. Het gaat makkelijk fout als je klaar bent met een stokje, een aantal lossen haakt en dan een verkeerd aantal steken overslaat (of helemaal vergeet over te slaan) achter of net na het stokje (foto 1)
• Als je aan de achterkant werkt, let er dan op dat je in ELKE steek een vaste haakt.. Soms zitten de stokjes een beetje verstopt, dus zorg dat je ze niet per ongeluk mist. (foto 2-3)

Finished size
The size of the finished blanket depends on the yarn and hook you use. My blanket is approx.
84 cm x 104 cm (33” x 41”). The blanket can be made in any size.

Pattern Notes
• Nya Mosaic Blanket is a repeating pattern of geometric stripes (chart) and dividers. Each geometric stripe is made with yarn in two shades.
• You can either follow the chart or written instructions.
• Ch1/ch2 in the beginning of each row doesn’t count as a st. So first sc/dc of each row is made in first stitch of previous row.
• All dc’s are made in sts of same color from 2 rows below – always in front of work.
• Change color on the last yarn over when there are still 2 loops on hook. Yarn is changed after every 2 rows.
Opmerkingen bij het patroon:
Nya Mosaic Blanket is een herhalend patroon van geometrische banen (vlg. schema) en tussen strepen. Elke geometrische baan is gehaakt met 2 kleuren garen.
• Je kan zowel het getekende schema volgen als de geschreven uitleg
• 1 losse/2 lossen aan het begin van elke toer telt niet als een steek. Dus de eerste vaste/stokje van elke toer haak je in de eerste steek van de vorige toer.

Reading the Chart
• Chart is read from bottom to top. Each row in chart represents two rows of same color. Rows on the RS (1,2,3, etc.) are read from right to left, and rows on WS (1a, 2a, 3a, etc.) are read back across from left to right. The first square of each row shows which color is used for 2 rows (1-1a, 2-2a, 3-3a, etc.)
• Each square of the chart shows 1 stitch or 1 skipped stitch. When squares of different colors appear in the row – they should be skipped. So instead of working them – make a number of ch (always 1 ch more than a number of skipped sts – to prevent your work from pulling) and skip needed sts. So for 1 skipped st you will ch2, for 2 skipped sts – ch3, for 3 skipped sts – ch4, etc.
• On next row on RS when you will crochet with different color – you will make dc in these skipped sts from two rows below. Dc’s are always made in front of your work, in front of chains of previous rows, so spacs are always skipped. (see pics below).
Lezen van het schema:
• Het schema lees je van onder naar boven. Elke rij is 2 toeren van dezelfde kleur. Toeren aan de goede kant (1,2,3 etc.) lees je van rechts naar links, de toeren aan de verkeerde kant (1a,2a,3a etc.) lees je van links naar rechts. Het eerste vierkantje van elke rij laat zien welke kleur wordt gebruikt voor de 2 toeren (1-1a, 2-2a, 3-3a, etc.)
• Elk vierkantje van het schema laat 1 steek of 1 overgeslagen steek zien. Als er vierkantjes van de tweede kleur voorkomen in de rij, dan moet je deze overslaan. In plaats van een vaste haak je dan lossen, haak altijd 1 losse meer dan het aantal overgeslagen steken, dit om trekken van je werk te voorkomen. Dus voor 1 overgeslagen steek haak je 3 lossen, voor 2 overgeslagen steken haak je er 3. Voor 3 overgeslagen steken haak je er 4, etc.
• Bij de volgende rij aan de goede kant, als je dus met de andere kleur begint, haak je stokjes in de overgeslagen steken van 2 toeren eronder. Stokjes worden altijd aan de voorkant van het werk gehaakt, voor de lossen langs, dus die worden dan altijd overgeslagen. Zie de afbeeldingen hieronder:
Following chart: start with “Begin” section, then repeat “One Repeat” six or more times (for a larger blanket), and finish with “End” section.

Common Mistakes:
• When working on RS it is very important to skip correct number of stitches. The mistakes can appear when you finish dc, make several chains and then skip wrong number of stitches (or don’t skip them at all) behind or just next to dc. (pic 1)
• When working on WS be sure to make sc in EVERY st without missing any. Sometimes dc can be “hiding”, so be sure not to miss them. (pics 2-3)
Veel voorkomende fouten:
• Als je aan de voorkant werkt is het heel belangrijk dat je het juiste aantal steken overslaat. Het gaat makkelijk fout als je klaar bent met een stokje, een aantal lossen haakt en dan een verkeerd aantal steken overslaat (of helemaal vergeet over te slaan) achter of net na het stokje (foto 1)
• Als je aan de achterkant werkt, let er dan op dat je in ELKE steek een vaste haakt.. Soms zitten de stokjes een beetje verstopt, dus zorg dat je ze niet per ongeluk mist. (foto 2-3)

The pattern for the Border is the same as for Divider – worked along two long sides of the blanket. Color for another side of the blanket are given in brackets.
Note: while working along the sides of the blanket, insert the hook under the floats of yarn on the side to hide them.

When Esther asked me to design a border for her blanket, I couldn’t resist. Of course! Such a honor! Esther asked for something textured but simple at the same time to frame the entire blanket and to support square patterns. And I gave it a try in overlay crochet.
This border was designed especially for Nuts About Squares CAL (squares with 44 stitches on each side) but you can use it for any blanket! The only important thing you should keep in mind is that stitch count on the first round, which should be multiple 4 plus one stitch.
You will need yarn in 4 shades for this border.
