Spirits of Life CAL: Part 2. Mosaic Adventure

Hello! How are you? If you are reading this, it means you are probably following Spirits of Life Wrap CAL. And you have probably finished Part 1 released last week. My Facebook feed was flooded with wonderfully beautiful pictures, and they made my heart happy. Part 1 was quite straightforward and easy to follow. And I hope today’s Part 2 will be not very challenging as well. If it’s first time you hear about Spirits of Life CAL, please, check General information HERE.

Are you prepared for a mosaic adventure? Today’s pattern uses Mosaic crochet. If you studied Important Notes for the CAL HERE and practiced a bit, you probably know already what is waiting for you. If not – don’t worry. I prepared detailed written instructions with pictures. And video, of course!

**IMPORTANT** What I would ask you to do is weigh all your colors again before and after Part 2 is finished. And carefully compare and put notes about used amounts into the table, which you can find in Part 1. Mosaic fabric should stay the same width as previous part. No flairs should appear on the edges. If you have them, it means your chains are not tight (and it also means you will use more yarn).

To solve this problem you have two options:

  1. To make all chains tighter, or
  2. Reduce all amounts of chains by one. So if pattern calls for ch2, make ch1 instead, and so on.

The fabric should not be too stiff and the edges should stay straight. These are basic rules for Part 2. Good news is that there are no tails to weave in. You will work with two colors only changing yarn after every other row. Without cutting it.

I’ve created a video tutorial to help you understand the placement of stitches on every row. As already mentioned, my video’s don’t have voice explanations (they are silent). I’ve got many questions about this on YouTube. And I have really many reasons to keep them as they are. I did my best to carefully show every stitch, and hopefully my video tutorial will be helpful.

For the needs of the video I have made a sample with just two repeats. You will be making more repeats for your own wrap (as per pattern). I marked first or last stitch in every repeat to show you how it looks. And then I am showing the end of every row. So in fact video does illustrate the entire pattern.

And I've added something extra this week. If you open video in YouTube and click "SHOW MORE" in description, you will see a break-down timing for every row. So now to find an exact row you don't need to watch/scroll the whole video :)

You can subscribe to my YouTube channel to have notifications about future videos delivered directly to your e-mail.

Please, take your time to block entire piece after Part 2 is finished. During next several weeks your wrap will be growing in different directions. And it will be very handy to keep dimensions under control.

EDIT: if your gauge is obviously different (smaller or bigger), please don't stretch your fabric too much to given measurements. Just block it "wisely" to get straight edges. And be careful with next parts so they fit together well. And don't worry :) But be aware that if your wrap is coming out bigger you will naturally need more yarn to finish it...

    Having Fun with C2C crochet

C2C (corner-to-corner) crochet technique is something new to me. I have seen lots of amazing afghans created by other people but my own acquaintance with C2C happened not so long ago. First time I tried it while making Last Dance on the Beach blanket (Scheepjes CAL 2016). My friend Carmen introduced a simple C2C square and I had lots of fun making it. And when I first made it myself C2C crochet technique didn’t seem so difficult and complicated anymore.
How to join as you go in C2C (corner-to-corner) crochet. By www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Suddenly I felt confident enough and used it for several parts of Spirits of Life CAL which started this week (see Part 1 HERE). I wanted to recreate zig-zag pattern and C2C appeared to be the best and easiest “tool” for that. I’ve learned how to change the colors, and I also had to use a join as-you-go method which I have never tried before. If you follow Spirits of Life CAL you will be doing C2C parts in several weeks already.
How to join as you go in C2C (corner-to-corner) crochet. By www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Apparently there is not so much information about join as-you-go method for C2C crochet. I was lucky to find nice video-tutorials but they explain how to join the squares. I thought it would be nice to also try it with triangles maybe? Colorful triangles always look great in “patchwork” patterns. And I thought of creating a pillow cover using leftovers of Soft Fun yarn by Scheepjes and C2C.
How to join as you go in C2C (corner-to-corner) crochet. By www.lillabjorncrochet.com

What I am doing is definitely not an invention of something new. And most likely there are some tutorials about the same thing already. But I thought I would create my own – not just to show the joining method, but to show method for exact pattern.
How to join as you go in C2C (corner-to-corner) crochet. By www.lillabjorncrochet.com

I have remade my sample a few times already trying to understand the best way of joining triangles. And I think I am almost there. I can’t wait to finish the pillow and show it to you. And I will also complete a video-tutorial to guide you through every step I made.

Spirits of Life Wrap CAL: Part 1

Welcome to the Spirits of Life Wrap CAL. We begin today with Part 1 (yay! Finally!). Before you actually start crocheting, pretty please, check General information for the CAL HERE and make a gauge swatch. Then, please, carefully read information below.
Spirits of Life CAL: Part 1. Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com in collaboration with Scheepjes

I hope that you are well prepared and that you practiced all three techniques introduced in the Important Notes HERE. Today’s part is a kind of relaxed. You will not be making any intricate stitches. It is more about getting used to the gauge and to different types of yarn. Part 1 consists of colorful stripes made with both Spirit and Catona yarns with a small zig-zag pattern in overlay crochet.
Spirits of Life CAL: Part 1. Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com in collaboration with Scheepjes

BEFORE you actually begin to crochet, please, make these two important things.

    1. Organize your colors. Each color in the pattern is marked with the letter (A,B,C…). Please, make an organizer and match each letter with the exact yarn. Because corresponding shades of Spirit and Catona can look very similar in the pictures, I would highly recommend you to refer ONLY to written instructions, and not the pictures.

Below you will see the picture representing color change for each colorway (Lake, Volcano and Orchid). But this is just a small help for you, so that you don’t use a totally different color. But again (!) while changing colors, please, refer to written pattern!

Here is the color key (you will also find it in the written pattern):

    Spirit of the Lake

    Yarn A Spirit 301
    Yarn B Catona 242
    Yarn C Spirit 309
    Yarn D Catona 164
    Yarn E Catona 205
    Yarn F Spirit 306
    Yarn G Catona 397
    Yarn H Spirit 307

    Spirit of the Volcano

    Yarn A Spirit 305
    Yarn B Catona 254
    Yarn C Spirit 311
    Yarn D Catona 258
    Yarn E Catona 179
    Yarn F Spirit 308
    Yarn G Catona 253
    Yarn H Spirit 304

    Spirit of the Orchid

    Yarn A Spirit 303
    Yarn B Catona 505
    Yarn C Spirit 302
    Yarn D Catona 263
    Yarn E Catona 395
    Yarn F Spirit 312
    Yarn G Catona 240
    Yarn H Spirit 307

And here is how my own “organizer” looks. Not fancy at all, but very helpful!
Spirits of Life CAL: Part 1. Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com in collaboration with Scheepjes

    2. Please, remove labels from the skeins and weigh each and every one.

If you are using the kit it is very important that you use exactly the same amount of each color as given in the pattern. In the files below (choose your language and download it) you will find the chart with yarn amounts in grams. For all 9 parts!! Please, weigh your yarn before and after each part is finished and carefully takes notes about your amounts (you can put them into printed instructions into the same chart as mine). This will give you a very clear vision about how much yarn you used. And if you are on track or not.

I used 3.25mm (D) hook but you may need to go one-two sizes up or down to obtain correct gauge.

Spirits of Life CAL: Part 1. Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com in collaboration with Scheepjes

I have created a video tutorial to help you understand written instructions better. Because the pattern is quite straightforward, the video doesn’t contain step by step instructions for every row. The video is meant as an additional help.

As you may notice, the video doesn’t have sound… and this is not because of technical problem. It was done on purpose. There were many reasons why I decided not to add any voice explanations. One of them is the CAL is translated to many languages, and far not everyone is speaking English. Instead I tried to use a “universal crochet language” and my hands to explain the pattern. And hopefully you will find it helpful and useful!

This and all next video’s will be posted on my YouTube channel HERE.

Happy crocheting! Can’t wait to see your finished samples!! You can post them in Official CCC Social group on Facebook (official host of Spirits of Life CAL) and also in my Ravelry group HERE. Every week there will be a separate thread created for each Part of the CAL.

If you don’t have a kit but would like to purchase one, they are still available (at the time of posting) at Wool Warehouse HERE* (UK, international shipping) and Loveknitting HERE* (US).

Spirits of Life Wrap CAL: General Information

Welcome to Spirits of Life Wrap CAL! First part will be released next week already. On Wednesday, October 18th to be precise. And now it’s the right time to give all details about the CAL, materials, gauge and everything. I’ve tried to make this blog post as short as possible. So please (!) read carefully through every paragraph not to miss anything.
Spirits of Life Wrap CAL: General information. Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com in collaboration with Scheepjes

    Introduction

Spirits of Life Wrap CAL was inspired by Native American fiber and textile art. It consists of several parts worked in different styles and crochet techniques. The wrap comes in three colorways: Spirit of the Lake, Spirit of the Volcano and Spirit of the Orchid. You can see more pictures of the wrap HERE. Spirits of Life Wrap CAL was kindly sponsored by Scheepjes who produced and nicely packed official kits.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate (see paragraph about techniques)

    Size: approx. 63cm x 180cm rectangle

Materials: Fingering/Sport yarn, 3.25mm (D) crochet hook. I used two different Scheepjes yarns – Spirit and Catona – in 8 corresponding shades (see paragraph about Materials) and Amour Clover Hook*.

    Materials: Yarn and Hook

As already mentioned, I used Spirit and Catona yarn by Scheepjes (reviewed HERE and HERE) in 8 corresponding shades. If you want to have all yarn in one place, you can order an official kit (still in stock at the time of posting). Read more about kits HERE.

Spirits of Life Wrap kits are available for purchase in local Scheepjes stores and via international retailers, such as Wool Warehouse HERE and Deramores HERE (both located in UK with international shipping), Lovektnitting HERE (US) and Knotty House HERE (Canada).

If you would like to support me and my blog, please, purchase the kits via links provided above. These links are affiliate, and I might be compensated with a tiny amount from each order. While you will not pay anything extra. Thank you in advance! :)

You can also purchase the skeins separately or use your own stash. Please, check exact yardages in the image below.

3.25mm (D) crochet hook is recommeded, but because your style of crochet might differ, you may need to go one or two sizes up or down. Please, make a swatch and see how it goes. Then you know which exactly hook you need.
Spirits of Life Wrap CAL: General information. Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com in collaboration with Scheepjes

    Gauge

This part is probably the most important! The gauge for Spirits of Life CAL is:

20 stitches x 16 rows = 10cm x 10cm (4” x 4”) with one row of double crochet and one row of single crochet (US terms). In other words, every 2 rows should measure approx. 1.25cm (1/2”) in height.

The gauge is valid for both Spirit and Catona. But because Spirit is a little bit difficult to frog, maybe you should practice with Catona. But the CAL will begin with Spirit yarn. And first several rows will give your wrap necessary width.

PLEASE (!!!) take your time to practice and obtain as closest gauge as possible. I do understand that everyone has his/her own style of crochet. But Spirits of Life Warp was designed around certain gauge. The entire pattern is worked in different directions: from bottom to top, in squares, with C2C panels which are crocheted diagonally. And gauge is important for all parts to fit perfectly, so that in the end you get and ideal rectangle shape.

If your gauge is off, you will obviously need more yarn, and you will probably need to block every part more “aggressively” to fit given measurements. And if your gauge is totally off – you will need to improvise…:)

Please, don’t be scared, or worried, or concerned too much. It’s not that difficult to correct your gauge. Please watch this video by Esther Dijkstra explaining what “golden loop” is and what impact it has on the height of the stitches.

If your sample is getting too high, while completing the stitches you need to lift every loop a little bit less than you usually do, and that should help your stitches to become shorter. And vise verse for too short stitches.

If you can’t do anything about the gauge – please make sure it is bigger or smaller proportionally. It means if you sample is higher, it should also be wider. Then there is a better chance all parts will fit together well. But again, you will need more yarn.

In Part 1 I will give you exact amounts of each shade used for every part. PLEASE, carefully take notes about your own yarns to be on track. But I will also come back to this later, when Part 1 is released next week.

    Techniques

Three different crochet techniques were used to create Spirits of Life Wrap pattern (exciting, right?): Overlay crochet, Mosaic crochet and Corner-to-corner crochet (C2C). I would highly recommend you to check Important Notes HERE (in different languages) and try making a small sample in every technique. Please, use your stash (not the kit yarn) to practice!

    Spirits of Life CAL: GIVEAWAY!

As already mentioned in the latest blog post HERE Spirits of Life kits have arrived to stores and are already available for purchase. Scheepjes kindly shipped me Spirit of the Volcano kit to write an “open the box” blog post. But unfortunately it arrived too late, at the time when kits announcement was LIVE already. I thought it’s a pity to open such a beautiful box, and instead I’ve come up with a better idea! A Giveaway!
Spirits of Life CAL_kits and giveaway

I am constantly receiving private messages and e-mails asking if there will be a video support for Spirits of Life Wrap CAL. And today I am not only happy to say YES! But also to introduce my brand new channel launched literally yesterday. Come and see my first ever video HERE introducing the CAL.

To be honest, I have always thought I will never ever make any video in my life. I am so afraid of technology, and very often I feel like I can’t find common language with it. But when a new CAL idea came to my mind 9 months ago, I thought: Well, I will probably have to learn making videos. No more excuses here. And today (YAY!) I have uploaded my first video.

I still have to go a long way to make my channel something nice and useful. But now when I know how to use my camera and how to edit video clips – everything feels much easier. So at the moment and in next weeks before the CAL I will be putting video instructions together and I hope you will find them helpful. I also plan to add more videos in the future featuring crochet tips, tricks and (of course!) video tutorials for my patterns. A few ideas have been queued already.
Spirits of Life CAL_kits and giveaway

***UPDATE: the Giveaway is CLOSED and winner will be announced shortly.***  So GIVEAWAY! If you would like to win a Spirits of Life Volcano kit, please, a) subscribe to Lilla Bjorn YouTube channel and b) leave a comment below THIS presentation video - on YouTube (not on my blog).

The Giveaway will run through Monday, October 9th, 2017. And the winner will be randomly chosen and announced the next day.
Spirits of Life CAL_kits and giveaway

Please, note that this giveaway is open to people worldwide but I will be shipping the kit myself from Europe. It means it will take it longer to be delivered to remote parts of the world and you might not receive it just on time when Spirits of Life CAL begins. And just to remind you, it will happen on October 18th. Pretty soon!

Spirits of Life Wrap kits are available for purchase in local Scheepjes stores and via international retailers, such as Wool Warehouse HERE* and Deramores HERE* (both located in UK with international shipping), Lovektnitting HERE* (US) and Knotty House HERE* (Canada).

    What’s inside the kit?

I chose two different yarns for this project, as I think they play together perfectly. And they also translate a certain mood. It’s Spirit and Catona (reviewed HERE and HERE). These yarns are very different in look and feel, but together they create a very light, warm, draping and textured fabric.

Spirits of Life CAL comes in three colorways: Spirit of the Lake, Spirit of the Volcano and Spirit of the Orchid. Each of them contains 4 shades of Spirit and 4 corresponding shades of Catona.
