Spirits of Life CAL: Part 7. Mosaic Pyramids

Welcome to Part 7 of Spirits of Life CAL! We are slowly moving to the end. Only 3 weeks are left and your wrap will be finished. This week you will be “passing exam” in Mosaic crochet. But you have made so much of mosaic crochet already, so that’s should not be a problem, right?

If you missed previous parts of Spirits of Life CAL, please check General Information, Important Notes, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, and Part 6.

This week’s pattern again consists of written instructions, a chart and video tutorial. All means for you not be lost.

Part 7 begins with a divider which is added on top of the squares - same as in Part 4. And then Mosaic panel is made with 2 colors only. So not many tails to weave in. I hope it’s a good news for you.

Spirits of Life CAL: Part 6. Overlay square with flower

Welcome to Part 6 of Spirits of Life CAL. This blog post will be the shortest as you know everything already and I don’t have much to add. This week we will be making squares in overlay crochet again. But the pattern for central medallion is different. This time it is a tiny flower.

If you missed previous parts of Spirits of Life CAL, please check General Information, Important Notes, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 and Part 5.

You will notice that instructions for this week are much shorter. That’s because I didn’t include Important notes again. But if you have some doubts or want to refresh your memories about overlay crochet, please, refer to notes from Part 3.

Spirits of Life CAL: Part 5. C2C crochet again!

Welcome to Part 5 of Spirits of Life CAL! Since last Wednesday I have read lots of lovely comments about previous part. It was made in C2C (corner-to-corner) crochet and I know for many of you it was the first time to try this amazing and effective technique. Today we will continue to create colorful waves. The pattern is almost the same, but made in a mirror reflection.

If you missed previous parts of Spirits of Life CAL, please check General Information, Important Notes, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4.

I have a happy news for you. We are half through the CAL and since today all three crochet techniques will be repeated. But with different patterns, as I didn’t want you to be bored. Let’s take the second half of the CAL as examination in C2C, Mosaic and Overlay crochet. And I am sure, after your wrap is finished you will feel confident with your newly acquired crochet skills.

I am often asked what is the length of crocheted fabric after each new part is added. It is very easy to calculate: put together figures for each part (you will find them in written patterns). After Part 5 you wrap’s measurements should be approx.: 56cm/22in (width) and 116cm/45.7in (length).

Waiting for Snow... Wintery Octagon Mandala - new pattern release

Don’t you think time is cruel? I seriously think so… It’s running (flying?) so fast that I can hardly keep up. Last year we celebrated Christmas with my friends. It was snowing and the weather and atmosphere was magic. And I am still warming these memories in my heart. But what? Christmas is coming again? Really? I am absolutely NOT ready! :) I haven’t even released any Christmas themed pattern so far. And I think I need to fix this. Today.
Wintery Octagon Mandala - overlay crochet pattern by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Spirits of Life CAL is taking all my time and thoughts at the moment. But that’s not the reason not to design anything else, what do you think? Today I would like to show you a Wintery Octagon Mandala (yay, I have designed a new mandala!). This design was hiding in my desk for several months already. And I think now is the right time to bring it to the world.

The pattern is available on Etsy and Ravelry with 30% discount through Monday, November 13th. The pattern is discounted already and no coupon code needed. Next week it will be listed at a regular price.

As you can see, it’s not a traditional circle mandala but an octagon. I wanted it to look festive and wintery, and tried to imitate a snowflake pattern. Octagon shape is great for blankets, and it’s easy to square up.
Wintery Octagon Mandala - overlay crochet pattern by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

I made several samples in different color palettes, but some patterns are just born to be monochrome, with just two shades. And this is an example of Wintery Octagon Mandala. A good thing is that there are no yarn tails to weave, as both yarns are carried on the wrong side from one row to the next. By switching placement of two yarns you can get a different visual effect.
Wintery Octagon Mandala - overlay crochet pattern by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

…Or you can make it in just one shade. I chose off-white. With hope that it will be snowing soon.
Wintery Octagon Mandala - overlay crochet pattern by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

I chose a linen stitch background (and I am officially in love with Linen stitch now) – same as for A Different Granny Square pattern. It helped to make crochet fabric very soft and draping. And at the same time added an “embroidery effect” to the background which gives a nice contrast to overlay stitches. I am very biased and I LOVE this pattern. And I am in love with each and every mandala created by my wonderful and helping testers.

What Wintery Octagon Mandala can be used for?

Wintery Octagon Mandala can be used in many different ways.

1. You can make just one mandala and use it as a doily/trivet or sew it onto ready fabric pillowcase.

2. Mandala’s center will become a wonderful potholder. You can even make two and sew them together for additional thickness and reverse look. The sample in the picture was made with three shades of Soft Fun yarn by Scheepjes*.
Wintery Octagon Mandala - overlay crochet pattern by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

3. You can add four corners to a mandala and it will become a square. A nice afghan block, or front decoration for your new pillow, maybe?
Wintery Octagon Mandala - overlay crochet pattern by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

4. If you complete only 8 first rounds, you will get a small star decoration. Great as Christmas hanging ornament, or bunting. Or even a festive table runner if you join small motifs together. I made mine with cotton yarn Catona*.
Wintery Octagon Mandala - overlay crochet pattern by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

5. And of course, Wintery Octagon Mandala can be used for large, textured blankets!! I have created a mini blanket with Colour Crafter yarn* by Scheepjes to show you how several octagons look together when joined. You may notice that octagons have a reverse colorway. It was also made on purpose to show you how different colors can play within the same pattern.

What does the pattern include:

  • Instructions for an octagon (with 2 shades)
  • Instructions for joining motifs (if you would like to make a blanket): square, side triangle, corner triangle.
  • Instructions on how to assembly the blanket and make the border.Wintery Octagon Mandala - overlay crochet pattern by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Brief facts about Wintery Octagon Mandala Pattern:

  • Level: Intermediate (front post stitches)
  • Just two shades are used for this mandala, so no need to weave in tails.
  • Octagon Mandala can be used in a variety of ways: as a doily/trivet, pillow, potholder, hanging ornament, blanket.

Spirits of Life CAL: Part 4. C2C Waves

Welcome to Part 4 of Spirits of Life Wrap CAL. If you are reading this, I believe you are right on track with previous parts. If not – don’t worry. The patterns and video tutorials will stay online and free forever. I hope this week will be a nice experience for both fans of C2C (corner-to-corner) crochet technique and those who have never tried it before. If you are familiar with C2C then this week should be relaxed and relatively easy for you. And if you are a newbie, here is the chance to learn something new again!

If you missed previous parts of Spirits of Life CAL, please check General Information, Important Notes, Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.

Part 4 consists of three dividers and two C2C panels which are worked on the top of completed body of your wrap, diagonally with join-as-you-go method. C2C Panel 1 is made with three shades and C2C Panel 2 is a bit easier, as you will only use two shades for it.

Please, note that this pattern doesn’t give basics of C2C crochet technique. If you want to practice before you actually jump to the CAL, please, try these two tutorials (HERE and HERE) by It’s All in A Nutshell and One Dog Woof. And to get a deeper insight into join-as-you-go method, you can try my Pastel Triangles pillow pattern HERE.

As you may know already, C2C crochet is mainly worked from charts. I understand that it might be tricky for beginners, so I wrote detailed text instructions, row by row. While following them you can also refer to charts, and to the video’s. I believe with all kinds of written and visual directions Part 4 should not be difficult for you.
Spirits of Life Wrap CAL: Part 4. Corner-to-Corner Waves (C2C). Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com in collaboration with Scheepjes

Corner-to-Corner crochet projects can be made in one-two shades only. And with multiple colors. For me the hardest thing in this technique is to understand how exactly colors should be changed. To make Part 4 as easy as possible, I wrote the pattern in such a way that all color changes are made similarly.

Colors are always changed when completing slip stitch when two cells of different colors “meet” (pic 1) or when you need to change yarn on the edge. Holding both yarns behind work, insert the hook into space of next cell and complete slip stitch with new yarn (pic 2). Tighten previous yarn (pic 3). Now continue to work new cell with new yarn. Isn’t it easy?!
Change of colors in C2C crochet

A very important thing you should always keep in mind while following the pattern is that C2C Panels are joined to the wrap’s “body” with join-as-you-go method.

To join as-you-go you will attach C2C panel to main body of the wrap with slip stitches in the beginning or end of EVERY row. While attaching panel to the body of the wrap, you will skip one OR two stitches on the last row of the body. The rows of the panel on which you will skip only ONE stitch are marked with red dots in the chart. When joining the rest of the Rows you will skip TWO sts on the body of the wrap.
C2C crochet - chart

That sounds veeery tricky. I know! But don’t worry. Just follow the pattern row by row and you will understand the idea. You may ask why should you skip one or two stitches on the body? Why not to always skip one or always two stitches? The answer is very simple: C2C panel should match the body perfectly in size. I tried different ways of designing this part. But it was getting either too wide, or too narrow. And the final version you will see – works the best (trust me)!

Here are colorways for Spirit of the Lake, Spirit of the Volcano and Spirits of the Orchid wraps:

Pastel Triangles Pillow: join-as-you-go in C2C crochet (video tutorial)

Corner-to-corner crochet technique (C2C) is great in many ways. It is very logic and easy, aimed to beginners. Being really easy it has endless possibilities for creation of unique and very intricate crochet fabrics. You can easily follow the chart and, more than that, you can create the charts by yourself!
C2C Pastel Triangles pillow - join as you go - tutorial by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

I have learned C2C about a year ago and totally fell in love with it. I used this technique for two parts of Spirits of Life CAL (next week the first part in C2C crochet will be released). I needed to join C2C panel with the body of the wrap, and I thought that join-as-you-go method is the best for this.

I made a small research and found a few tutorials on how to actually join-as-you-go in C2C. But many of them are describing how to join the squares. I thought what if I try to create a pattern with triangles and try to apply the same method. And it worked well. So I decided to make a video-tutorial and share it with you. Well, I am not saying it’s the first and only tutorial out there! It’s just mine, and with a certain pattern in mind.
C2C Pastel Triangles pillow - join as you go - tutorial by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Add this pattern to your Ravelry Queue

What does “join-as-you-go” mean? It means you don’t need to crochet around each element and then join them all into finished fabric. Instead, each new element is seamlessly added to the previous one. Very handy and saves lots of time!
C2C Pastel Triangles pillow - join as you go - tutorial by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

 Important to Know

I created a crochet decoration for a fabric pillow cover. And used leftovers of Soft Fun yarn* by Scheepjes in 8 shades (see color key below, with the chart). I was trying to think of the best way to explain how I did everything. And here are some important things I’ve come up with.

1. If you want to create a crocheted fabric with triangles, you should think of them as if they were squares. My pillow cover is built in rows with squares, and each of them consists of 2 triangles. So every square is started with one triangle and then when desired size is reached, the yarn is changed and the square is finished with second triangle, as you normally do in C2C.

C2C Pastel Triangles pillow - join as you go - tutorial by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

2. Triangles “inside” each square are not the same size. For my pillow pattern I made them with 7 and 8 rows. But of course you can make them bigger (or smaller). And of course you can make your piece with any number of triangles (= in any size)!

3. It is important to understand how first several triangles are joined together in each row, and the rest of the row is just a repeat of what has been made already.

4. When you join new triangles, it is important to watch the direction of the stitches: they should not be placed in the same direction (see picture below).
C2C Pastel Triangles pillow - join as you go - tutorial by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Ideally wrong and right sides of closely situated blocks should also alternate. But sometimes it is not possible, and to be honest I don’t think is it absolutely necessary. In the end it doesn’t have any impact on the final look of the project. At least it’s not visible in my pillow.

How to Read the Chart

Please, note that this tutorial is not aimed to teach C2C crochet. If you have never tried it before, please, check information about C2C technique HERE and HERE (tutorials by One Dog Woof and It’s All In A Nutshell)

I’ve created the chart to show you layout of my colors. Please, read it in “rows of squares”, from bottom to top and from right to left. The order of triangles in every row is marked with numbers. The starting point of each triangle is marked with arrows. After Rows 1 and 2 are completed, the rest of the pattern is repeating of Row 2. When entire piece is finished, work the border around it.
C2C Pastel Triangles pillow - join as you go - tutorial by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Colour key in Soft Fun yarn* (given for Row 1):

Triangle 1 – shade 2624,
Triangle 2 – shade 2604,
Triangle 3 – shade 2613,
Triangle 4 – shade 2466,
Triangle 5 – shade 2531,
Triangle 6 – shade 2423,
Triangle 7 – shade 2611,
Triangle 8 – shade 2431.

Instead of explaining with words how I joined triangle together, I created a video tutorial for you. Hope it will be clear and helpful!
