HULDRA: Build Your Own Sweater

A year ago I suddenly felt very strong trying my hand in designing crochet garments. I was (and still am) under impression of beautiful round yoked knitting sweaters. I loved the look of intricate colourworks. And I thought it would be so great to create something similar in crochet. Nearly a year ago I got a plan to build up a small collection of seamless top-down crochet sweaters. And Esja sweater was my first design. I am so thankful for your support and trust, and I am blown away with how many Esja’s have popped up in my social media feed. And today I would like to introduce HULDRA!

HULDRA Sweater pattern is available on Ravelry HERE and Etsy HERE with 30% discount through Monday, February 25th, 2019. The discount was already applied to price and no codes are needed. After this date the pattern will be listed at a regular price.

Huldra is a top-down seamless sweater with easily adjusted length of the body and sleeves. It was designed as an oversized garment with 10-20cm/4-8” positive ease on the body and fitted sleeves.

Sleeves and the body are finished with cuffs and hem which can be omitted if you would like to keep your sweater simple and with main accent on the textured yoke.

Round yoke is crocheted with textured stitches. You will only work with one color at a time, and the technique is not tricky at all. In fact, only usual crochet stitches are used in Huldra sweater. And a heavy photo-tutorial in the end of the pattern will help you to see placement of all stitches.

Huldra Sweater comes in eight (8!) sizes: XS (S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X, 4X) with finished bust circumference: 92.5 (101, 109.5, 115.5, 122, 136.8, 149.5, 162) cm/ 36.4 (39.8, 43, 45.5, 48, 54, 58.8, 63.8) in.

To choose the right size you should measure your actual bust, add 10-20cm/4-8” (depending on how roomy you want your sweater to be) and choose closest number from listed above.

I made two samples for myself. One of them is with long sleeves and wide cuffs. I chose Our Tribe yarn by Scheepjes in three colors: silver grey, dark grey and black (you can always stay with two colors to keep the patterning less busy). In the pictures below you can see this sweater on me. I normally wear S size, but this sweater is M, and I have lots of space in the lower body.

Approx. yarn amounts for Our Tribe yarn are:

~ Yarn A: Motivate 983 x 1 (1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2) balls
~ Yarn B: Trust 982 x 1 (2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3) balls
~ Yarn C: Blackberry Black 881 x 3 (3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5) balls

And for my second sleeveless top (LOVE it so much) I picked Ombre Whirl 562 Petrol Please Me and combined it with Whirlette 865 Chewy. Isn’t this gradient lovely?!

This top is S size and I have just a little bit of positive ease. I only needed two cakes (one Whirl and one Whirlette) for mine, but for larger sizes you’ll obviously need more yarn.

Our Tribe, Whirl and Whirlettes are available for purchase in your local Scheepjes stores, or via online retailers:

Wool Warehouse*, Black Sheep Wools*, Deramores* (all in UK with international shipping)
Caro’s Atelier* (NL and Europe)
Taemombo* (CA&US), Knotty House* (CA)

For a sleeveless "whirly" version of Huldra yarn estimates are:

1 (1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2) cakes of same Whirl, and
1 (1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2) cakes of same Whirlette.

Please, note (!!!), that these are just estimates, and if your crochet style and gauge differ, you might need more yarn (for example, you might need 2 Whirlettes for size L).

Whirlette was used as Yarn A. And for Yarns B and C I used different tails (outside and inside) of the same Whirl.

So the yoke was started with Whirlette, then contrasting Whirl was added as Yarn B, and then opposite tail of Whirl was used as Yarn C. If you need 2 cakes of Whirl, you’ll be using them both at the same time, changing between cakes on every round – for one long gradient. And then Whirlette will be used again for the hem.

2. Sandra Veneman chose tone-on-tone colors for her lovely Huldra
3. Sarah Fabbri was "whirling"
4. Esther Schippers decided for ¾ sleeves and longer body to turn her sweater into a tunic

    1. Hello Jane! It's difficult to answer your question :) If you can follow written pattern, make front post sttiches and keep your gauge under control - then yes! you can try this pattern out :)

  8. Hello, I bought your model but there are some explanations I could not understand even the photos. I am Spanish but speak French fluently. Do you think about translating this model into one of these two languages?
    Thanks

  9. Hello, I bought the Dutch version of the pattern. I think there is a mistake in it. I have checked an enlargement of one of your photos and concluded that there should be a repeat of row 11 and 16 in between rows 20 and 21.
Greetings, Karin Robbers. And thanks for the beautiful pattern.

    1. Hello Karin, thank you, I will have a look. But you are the first one who reports any problems with Dutch version... I believe other people made it already. But it's worth double checking.

  10. Hello,
I'm confused by your htr abbreviation explanation (uk)which says in bold 'under three loops'. Could you explain that stich please .I'm a beginner-ish and have done htr before but don't understand how to do 'under three loops' . I can't find it on you tube either.
    Thank you!

    1. Hello! htr stitch has two loops on top and then third loop behind the post of the stitch. To insert the hook under all three loops, simply insert it between the stitches. then you will get reversable fabric.

  11. Dear Tatjana, thank´s for this lovely pattern.

I bought it yesterday and did the gauge immediatly (because I´m really exited to do the sweater). Now I have a little problem: I am with hooksize 4 (!) a good centimeter under gauge. I tried it with hs 4,5 and now I am over gauge. AND I don´t like the look of my mesh-structure! It looks to "fluffy", not compact enough. So I would prefer to crochet with HS 4.

What do you think I should do that the sweater still fits loosly (but not to loosly). I really don´t want an slime fit sweater! *laugh* By measurement I would have to chrochet an L-version of the sweater! Should I go up a size an crochet the XL-Version!?

I´m not a beginner, but I´m new to chrochet garnments, so your advice would be very welcome! Thank you in advance, have a lovely day and greetings from Austria,
    Birgit

    1. Huldra was designed as an oversized garment. It should have enough space in bust otherwise it will be not very comfortable to wear, because the yoke is very deep. Regarding the gauge, I can't really say without seeing your pictures with measuring tape. The best would be try and stick to the gauge as per pattern. then you are safe about the size.

  12. After finishing your Rozeta, I decided to get this pattern! Looks awesome :)
One quick question. If I want to make the full sweater (with sleeves) using whirl/whirlettes, which part should I should for sleeves? With the color changing, I am not sure if there’s a way? Let me know if you have suggestions :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Color changes for sleeves with whirl is always a tricly question :) I don't know which size we are talking about, but you can either take two Whirls and make both sleeves the same, or you can take one Whirl and somehow divide it to make sure the changes of colors on both sleeves are the same. Or the easiest would be to take just a whirlette and make sleeves one-colored. But then you should choose the 100% matching Whicl and Whirlette. Maybe have a look at Taemombo Ravelry page? She made Fjell cardigan with Whirls and she gives explanation on her project page about how she used thm for sleeves.

  13. I love the short sleeve Huldra. It's hot in South Texas and cotton or light fingering would be so nice.

  14. Hi Tatsiana, I bought this gorgeous pattern ages ago, and I found some Whirlettes on offer in limited colours. I have some Whirls but only one of each colour. Really I don’t want to buy more yarn until I’ve stash busted some more but I would buy the Whirlettes. I would make Large, maybe I should go larger because I want sleeves and my arms are fat. For Large long sleeves how many Whirlettes would I need? Has anyone combined two colours in Whirl, or would that be horrible? I do have a lot of Hobbii Whirls which are 100% cotton, would that be too stiff? I think the tension swatch would need washing in case of shrinking with those. Sorry to ask so many questions.
