Granny Square Flair: book review and giveaway

Everyone knows what a granny square is. Even people who are not quite familiar with crochet have seen the granny squares most likely. And granny squares are first thing that comes to our mind when we think of crochet. Our grandmothers and grand grandmothers made them. But as everything else, crochet is developing constantly, and new stitches are born every day. And today granny squares may look very different. Modern and fresh. Granny Square Flair book by Shelley Husband of Spincushions, which was published recently, collects of wonderful selection of such modern and fresh granny squares. And today I would like to share my thoughts about this book.

“Making crochet squares is gratifying in so many ways. They give you a sense of achievement, since you can complete a square easily in one sitting. You get to do a little happy dance every time you finish one.” Shelley Husband

DISCLOSURE: My copy of Granny Square Flair book arrived on August 28th – just on the day of my birthday. And opening the package delivered from UK felt like a real birthday gift. Shelley Husband sent me a copy of her book for review, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

What’s inside Granny Square FLAIR book?

As already mentioned, Granny Square Flair book includes instructions for 50 modern granny squares. And all of them come in one size: approx. 15cm/6in when made with 8ply/DK/light worsted yarn and a 4mm (G) hook, if your tension is average. There are also suggestions given on how to adjust the size and make squares larger or smaller.

Before jumping to patterns’ instructions it might be helpful to study several chapters about different types of yarn and hooks, joining methods and pattern notes. I just love Shelley’s seamless tips – something new to learn and use in my own designing work.

Each pattern in placed on a separate page in the book together with written round-by-round instructions, a chart, a picture of a finished square (I love the idea of showing off all squares in one off-white color) and several colorful version with different shades.

Although I prefer to crochet with charts whenever possible, I found some of them to be difficult to read. Because of several layers being used at the same time. For these complex squares I would choose to follow written instructions (and they are easy to understand) with partial referral to the charts. In general I would say Flair book is perfect for both beginners and advanced crocheters, as everyone will find something for himself.

I couldn’t help myself and tried my hook on Iron Lace square. Isn’t its texture lovely?

Next chapter of Granny Square Flair book is not less exciting as it shows 11 crochet projects made with granny squares listed in the book. I honestly love all of them, but because recently I am all about gradient and variegated yarn, my absolute favourites are Melbourne Wrap and Dahlia Scarf.

Melbourne Wrap was made by Shelley with my own colorway of Our Tribe yarn by Scheepjes*.

And Dahlia Scarf uses two skeins of Our Tribe yarn in shade Haak Maar Raak.

Finally Shelley Husband suggests tips for how to design your own crochet projects using granny squares: how to choose yarn, patterns and layout. And how to estimate approx. yardages for a project.

In the very end of the Granny Square Flair book you will find a complete Glossary with all crochet stitches used in the patterns, their descriptions and explanation of symbols from the charts.

  20. Granny squares are the reason I started crochet. As a small girl from central Europe I watched american movies and everywhere they had some type of Granny squares blanket. I liked and wanted to have one at home. I have to say now, I have only one on my sofa, but my friends have many others.
I love to make them, because it's simple and neat.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I usually have a granny square project of one kind or another going at the same time as a larger project. There is something very therapeutic about making different squares (even joyful when they all come out the same size) blocking them and joining them. I have a dream that once I retire I can make one of every square that I have collected patterns of over the years. Sadly, I still have quite few years before that day!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I love to crochet, but granny squares haven't been my favorite project because they have to be joined together after the squares are done. However, some of the squares illustrated are so beautiful, they would be worth the effort.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Most definitely yes! Crochet has skipped a generation in my family, but prior to the passing of my Gram's, she taught me just enough. My four sisters and I end up Skyping weekly to work on squares and other projects so we can have fun together and stay in touch. Granny squares and crochet itself is very calming and I look forward to teaching my children.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Simply changing the yarn weight, or going to multiple colours, can completely change the “feel” or “mood” of the square.

  50. I actually have not made many granny squares, as I look for unique patterns. I do love the satisfaction each time a square is completed! I love the look of different stitches on different squares, to show the contrast in a blanket it throw. What a brilliant idea to use just one color, and a rich one at that! It brings out the beauty of each square, without being distracted by different colors I am excited to try my hand at your patterns! Your patterns are stunning!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Granny squares are great for learning new stitches and not be overwhelmed with a huge project of them. Since these are all the same size, you can try them all and end up with LOTS of squares for a sampler style blanket....repeating the squares you fell in love with!
I used a granny square and did a mood blanket.....one square per week th some filler ones to make up the balance.

  58. Good evening from Idaho! I remember at a very young age to knit and crochet. My first project at age 8, was one huge granny square. What a wonderful task that was. Now that I am older, I love crocheting the best. Granny squares are a unique and creative way to display different tectures styles. Every granny square that I make goes into projects for Hospice and the elderly, with a prayer and many blessings for each square. Your book looks very good and look forward to trying out your amazing patterns. Have a very blessed evening.

Modern crafters like you and Shelley and your peers do a great job of passing on these age old skills but with a new and innovative outlook. Long may it continue. My go-to crochet pattern will always be the Granny Square. From little squares, fabulous objects grow.

  121. Till a dozen years ago I believed Granny Squares were old-fashioned crochet, but due to modern designers I changed my point of view. It is a matter of new structures, color schemes, geometrical patterns... the traditional Granny Square has a brand new and modern twist and endless possibilities! Moreover, you can crochet a granny square in a sitting, and they take less room... Crocheting Granny Squares is democratic as you can easily carry them around in a little bag - and be definitly more human counting your stitches rather than looking at your phone display... Huge projects grow from a few dozens of little, humble Granny Squares!

  133. Just came across this post... I must say I was smiling when I read your blog about granny squares. To me granny squares do remember me of my grandmother, who started to crochet for her grandchildren and the first thing I received from her as a gift was a shoulder bag made out of grannies! When my daughter asked me to teach her how to crochet I started making granny squares myself and I've got hooked :) So to win a book with new patterns of granny squares would be awesome!

  134. I am a granny fanatic. There are so many patterns and colors that inspire my creativity. I have joined some groups that swap granny squares. It is a lot of fun. Every month we have one pattern to crochet and we make another as we wish. I really look forward to my little package in the mail. If I win the giveaway, my challenge will be to make every square in the book and pick my favourite to create a cardigan or maybe a blanket. Thank you and good luck to everyone!

  141. I love making granny squares because they can be simple or colorful, full of texture or smooth. They go so quickly and you see a blanket come together all at once when you join instead of little by little when you do rows. I'm making my first granny square blanket right now and love it!

  142. Awesome book! I have to try my chance first at the giveaway before actually getting it since this is one of my current projects: doing different types of granny squares in one single color and then joining to make a baby blanket. I am loving it because the square itself takes hardly any time to make at all, I feel like I have accomplished so much by doing one at a time and then when I put them together, the whole project grows like magic. I love making blankets but I don't get the chance with small kids to work on anything for too long and if they take too long to complete... I have many bags of UFOs! :D I also love modern granny squares, they have a complete different look from the ones we grew up with! A Grinda is also another current work in progress ;-).

  153. I do like granny squares! So I started doing your Sophie loves lill a winter blanket, with zero crochet experience AT ALL. For me it's quite honestly pain management. I can't tolerate medications especially due to my nature of work, so I thought I needed something to take my mind off it. Happy to report on almost done with the blanket, it's only been a month (gurl, that's a lot of pain lol) and I've really surprised myself! Granny squares are quick (than an entire blanket) and the finished product is satisfying. It helps i have a good teacher;) (yep. You, and your blogs and the east understandable writing)

I discovered the joy of crocheting a blanket that grew 1 square at a time and didn't fill my lap, making me too hot, as it grew. Also discovered the joy of playing with the many joining stitches available out there. So now I'm hooked and this book looks like a heavenly thing to have and use for the next 40 years! :)

  160. A granny square afghan was the first work of crochet I ever saw as a 4 year old in a grand house of an 85 year old woman. It had pride-of-place in her parlor. On my first trip to visit my east coast grandparents, what should I find on my grandmother's daybed but a very similar granny square afghan (with black being the only border and connecting color allowed to tie in the pieces). Some years ago, I made my west coast grandmother a granny square afghan in pinks - her favorite color, but need to get back to it, after having viewed the gorgeous and amazing granny squares created by Ms. Husband. I'm especially fond of the "Dahlia" neckscarf - love the colors - as we have a bumper crop of dahlias this year and currently have (yes, I counted them) 97 blooms to keep me happy.

  176. My granny square repertoire consists of one model of granny square - the good old fashioned, traditional granny square that everyone learns to make when they start hooking!!!!!! There is something very comforting about Granny Squares. Maybe it's a sense of lovingly bringing an age old tradition into the 21st century with a twist of the new and interesting. This book looks delicious and I'd love the opportunity to experiment taking my granny square hooking skills to the next level!!!! :)

  187. Being a lefty, when I was young (40+ years ago) teaching me to crochet was a step too far for the craft teacher and my friends mothers ... it was a craft I had to let go as being "not do-able".
Just over 3 years ago when I had a very bad episode of psoriasis, my skin was very itchy and very sore, I had to find something to keep my hands busy. Having been at a friends house a few month prior to this, my friend (a craft writer) had been crocheting and I recalled how fantastic I thought her work was and how relaxing it looked. So, with new determination I decided crochet was going to be my saviour!
So hooks and wool bought I spent weeks and weeks practicing all the basic stitches - rows and rows, back and forth. YouTube and books - fantastic! Then when I felt I could try something the granny square was the obvious choice - right?
Well I nearly wept after my first attempt - it was clear pattern reading skills needed to be honed too - it was terrible. Still determined I practiced and practiced - and finally I made something that looked reasonably like a granny square!! I was so happy I felt I could conquer the world!! Within a year I was making "Circles of the Sun".
If I struggle with a pattern now and start to feel despondent, I take out my bag of practice pieces and remind myself of the fantastic journey I have had - and how that 1 granny square opened a whole new world for me (and has helped keep my hands away from my skin!). I love granny squares!

    ReplyDelete
  188. I love granny squares!!! They allow me to utilize the partial skeins of yarn left over from bigger projects. I love the fact that I can throw them into my bag and take them to appointments or anywhere I'm going to have some down time. I receive more complements on my granny projects than on any other of my projects.
