Final Part: Circles of the Sun CAL

Today is a very special day. Special for many reasons. Today the last clue for Circles of the Sun Mystery CAL is published. It feels sad and great and the same time. Sad because I got quite used to run to a computer every Friday evening and publish a new mystery post for you, and I don’t really know what I will be doing now when the CAL is over (…but actually I have lots of things to do :) I will be back to full-time designing – oh yes, I will!). But it also feels great because you will finally finish your Circles of the Sun pillow. I know that some of you decided to make blankets, and even bags using these blocks. So in fact, the most fun part of the CAL is coming now. Because soon (I really-really hope) we will see lots of beautiful finished objects! Please, don’t forget to share the pictures with me. You can do it either in my Ravelry group or on Facebook.

3 Ways to Join Granny Squares

There are many ways to join the grannies. I think everyone has its own one. Maybe you were taught by your grandmother or maybe you tried something before and now you prefer a particular method. I don’t crochet granny squares very often, I never make blankets of them (and if I do, then I prefer to join “as-I-go”). But I like to make not very big decorations for pillow covers from squares – something like I made for Circles of the Sun Mystery CAL. And then I need to join them. I have tried different ways and in this post I would like to share my own experience with you.

Block 9 - Circles of the Sun CAL

Today was a very long day. It started early in the morning and then I was traveling for the whole day. I am posting from Stockholm now. I came to Sweden to work for almost two weeks. And if I survive, my next (final) post with Circles of the Sun will be made from Malmö :) This is my first time in Stockholm and I like it very much. This city has a very special atmosphere and it was nice to walk through the old town and listen to live music. I would like to post tons of pictures but I know (yes!) that you are waiting for Block 9. So here it is!

Circles of the Sun - Block 8

We are slowly coming to the end of Circles of the Sun Mystery CAL. Only two more blocks are left and then you will join all nine squares and crochet a border around front decoration for your new pillow cover. Today's granny square is another imitation of a flower – with two rounds of petals. Please, feel free to change the order of your colors in a way that suits you the best. Today I post much earlier than usually. When this posts reaches you, I will be on a train for a 17 hours ride.  And I really hope to see all your small colorful beauties when I am back on-line :)

Say NO! to holey corners

If you like to crochet granny squares (and I LOVE them) you have probably noticed that it is quite hard to avoid the holes in the corners. To make increases in the corners it is necessary to make spaces there – at least I crochet granny squares like this. These holes look very natural in lace blocks, but what if your square is stiff? Made in Overlay crochet, for example? I personally don’t mind combination of stiff and lace crochet fabrics, but if you want to make a pillow cover and your pillow’s fabric looks not very nice, then you will probably want to fill the holes in the corners somehow. I didn’t think about this at all before I saw grannies made by Els Quijt (Ravelry). She is following Circles of the Sun Mystery CAL and her blocks are among my favourite! Els came up with a great tip on how to “close” holey corners. With her kind permission and support I made a short photo-tutorial to illustrate this tip. By the way, this picture of a flower square you see – belongs to her. Isn’t it beautiful?

Block 7 - Circles of the Sun CAL

Today I was trying to remember what my life was before I decided to design Circles of the Sun CAL. And I couldn’t really remember. During last 6 months I am living with the thoughts about it every day. One day I got a message on Facebook from my friend Joana. She sent me a link to Derdi’s Sophie Universe (yes-yes, this is how it all started) and said: "Yay! I must do that!" I remember that I was under a huge impression from what I saw. Many times I wrote how much I admire Dedri and her creative work. Do you actually know that she is following Circles of the Sun now? I couldn’t believe that, and I am so happy!

North Sea Mandala - Free Pattern

Two weeks ago I came back from a wonderful vacation in Belgium by the North Sea. I was inspired by beautiful sea landscapes and dunes, pale sun light and gray waves. And I came up with an idea of a new mandala design. You can see some pictures and read about it here. North Sea Mandala is back from testers and I am happy to introduce a new free crochet pattern! It is very easy to follow with lots of step-by-step pictures. Using it you can create nice Mandala potholders and matching coasters. I used Larra cotton yarn by Scheepjes to crochet my North Sea Mandala in two colors – peach and turquoise. Those in my opinion go together perfectly! Two skeins were enough for me to crochet two mandalas and 4 coasters (though, please, note that I am a rather tight crocheter). I hope you will enjoy this pattern.
