Fall Apple Basket: Free Crochet Pattern

Can be baskets and storage boxes enough? Well, not for me… I am constantly buying new boxes and they are filled up with things very quickly. With yarns, leftovers, wips, finished or unfinished projects, needles, crochet hooks… everything. Paying for new storage items can be very expensive. But why not to make them yourself? I have designed a basket for Knotions magazine. And this pattern is available for free!

The Fall Apple Basket is a quick and fun project to make. With small textured decorative elements it gives a great opportunity to master front post stitches. And it’s suitable for Intermediate (or Adventurous Beginner) crocheters. Made in different color palettes this basket will become a bright interior accessory in your kitchen or bathroom. With bulky yarn and large hook it will take almost no time to finish it.

The size of this basket is very easy to adjust but please note that your yardages will differ. My basket is approx. 9.5″ in circumference (24cm) — 6″ (15cm) wide across the bottom — and 4″ (10cm) high. To make it larger you should just crochet more rounds for the bottom evenly making 6 increases per round. And the rest of the pattern will work as written. You can also make your basket higher if you wish by just adding more rounds for the sides before decorative element.

Jody, editor of Knotions magazine, asked me to design something in fall colors. I chose apple green as main shade and it gave a name to my basket. But of course you can take any choose for this project. And you can absolutely use up yarn leftovers.

I wanted my basket to be thick and firm enough to keep its shape. Unfortunately I don’t have bulky yarn in stash. So I decided to work with 2 strands of Soft Fun by Scheepjes and 5.5mm (I) Clover Amour crochet hook*.

Soft Fun is a very nice cotton blend. It contains 40% of acrylic, and it’s machine washable. And your basket will last forever. It comes in 37 shades and they give endless opportunities for color combinations. Soft Fun is very soft and comfortable to work with. Please, have a look at color charts and choose yours at Wool Warehouse (HERE*), Deramores (HERE*) or in your local Scheepjes stores.

    1. Thank you! First I made a basket and then when I took apples they appeared to be the same colors as my yarn.
