Fjell Cardigan: new crochet pattern

My crochet garment collection is growing slowly but steadily. And today I am happy to introduce Fjell Cardigan! “Fjell” means mountain in Norwegian. And I decided to pick this name (thanks to Hilde Tindlund for suggestion), because mosaic patterning on the yoke reminds me of mountains.

Fjell Cardigan is a third garment in round yoked “Icelandic” collection which is already presenting Esja Sweater and Huldra Sweater.

As other top down garments, this cardigan is worked from neck opening with several short rows shaping back neck. After yoke is completed, it is divided for body and sleeves and those are finished separately.

The pattern is available for purchase on Ravelry and Etsy with 30% discount through Monday, June 3, 2019. The price you see is discounted already, and no codes are needed. Later the pattern will be listed at a regular price.

This design uses mosaic crochet technique – a very simple and fun. Ornamental mosaic on the yoke is growing into mosaic panels on the body and sleeves.

Only basic crochet stitches are used here (single crochet, double crochet and chains – US terms). And there are almost no ends to weave in, as we use one color for two rows and the yarn is changed in the end of the row without cutting.

The pattern contains full written instructions row-by-row together with charts, and you can follow both. Additionally a heavy photo-tutorial is placed in the very end of the pattern to guide you through every row of mosaic panels.

Fjell Cardigan crochet pattern is available in English (US and UK terms), Dutch and Norwegian languages.

The layout of the pattern is designed in such a way, that you don’t need to print the pictures if you want to save paper and ink. Instead you can refer to them on your laptop or tablet.

I made two samples for myself to show you different colors – with fingering (4ply) yarn and 3mm crochet hook.

One of them uses hand dyed yarn I bought at Yarndale last year. Because at that moment I didn’t know what I was going to make with this yarn, I only bought 3 hanks in main color. And they were not enough to finish the body and long sleeves. That’s why my sleeves are a bit cropped. But I am very happy with their fit.

And another cardigan was made in slightly bigger size than I usually wear to show the oversized fit. I picked 100% alpaca from my stash in two dark shades to try and play with tone-on-tone effect. I think it came out nicely. At first the yoke was ruffling quite a lot because of the increases, but blocking did it magic. And my cardigan fits just right!

If you want to see both cardigans in "real life", make sure to watch Episode 77 of Fruity Knitting. I am talking with Andrea about mosaic crochet, imitation of brioche and challenges in writing crochet patterns. And I am wearing my Fjell Cardigan :)

And of course I just have to show you masterpieces made by my wonderful testers – sending huge thanks their way. Just look at the variety of colors!

And just a remind, the pattern is available for purchase on Ravelry and Etsy with 30% discount through Monday, June 3, 2019. The price you see is discounted already, and no codes are needed. Later the pattern will be listed at a regular price.

    1. any fingering (4ply) yarn will work well for this pattern. for a blue sample I used hand dyed yarn. If yuo look for Scheepjes, then Our Tribe, Whirl/Whirlette and Metropolis are good choice.

    1. hi Inger, it's impossible to convert without additional math... You should begin with a gauge swatch with your DK yarn and see how many stitches you have in 10 cm. Then look at the pattern just before devision for body and sleeves, and compare your gauge to these numbers... Maybe pm me on FB? It's quite tricky to explain what to do :)

  9. Hi, beautiful pattern. You've said it took 3 hanks of the main colour. Is it possible to use just one hank of the contrasting colour if making a medium / large. Thanks, Karen

    1. it depends on the yarn you use, and also on your crochet style. Please, check pattern for exact amounts of contrast color for every size. I used less of main color because I made sleeevs shorter.

  10. Hello, I have bought your beautiful pattern.
I wonder if any of these Scheepjes yarn would work: Catona, Larra, Cotton 8.

    Kind regards,
    Iréne

    1. Hi Irene, cotton 8 might work, yes. But I would suggest Whirlette.

    1. Sorry for late reply! Please, go to Ravelry and search for Taemombo. In her projects you will find a Fjell Cardigan made with Whirls. And she explains how she used yarn for the sleeves.

  14. Hi, is it possible to make this as a sweater instead of cardigan? Love the pattern, I'm just not much in to cardigans generally. Thanks!

    1. Sorry for late reply! Yes, I know that some people turned it into a sweater. You will need to play with beginning and end to match the mosaic pattern
