Spirits of Life CAL: Part 4. C2C Waves

Welcome to Part 4 of Spirits of Life Wrap CAL. If you are reading this, I believe you are right on track with previous parts. If not – don’t worry. The patterns and video tutorials will stay online and free forever. I hope this week will be a nice experience for both fans of C2C (corner-to-corner) crochet technique and those who have never tried it before. If you are familiar with C2C then this week should be relaxed and relatively easy for you. And if you are a newbie, here is the chance to learn something new again!

If you missed previous parts of Spirits of Life CAL, please check General Information, Important Notes, Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.

Part 4 consists of three dividers and two C2C panels which are worked on the top of completed body of your wrap, diagonally with join-as-you-go method. C2C Panel 1 is made with three shades and C2C Panel 2 is a bit easier, as you will only use two shades for it.

Please, note that this pattern doesn’t give basics of C2C crochet technique. If you want to practice before you actually jump to the CAL, please, try these two tutorials (HERE and HERE) by It’s All in A Nutshell and One Dog Woof. And to get a deeper insight into join-as-you-go method, you can try my Pastel Triangles pillow pattern HERE.

As you may know already, C2C crochet is mainly worked from charts. I understand that it might be tricky for beginners, so I wrote detailed text instructions, row by row. While following them you can also refer to charts, and to the video’s. I believe with all kinds of written and visual directions Part 4 should not be difficult for you.

Corner-to-Corner crochet projects can be made in one-two shades only. And with multiple colors. For me the hardest thing in this technique is to understand how exactly colors should be changed. To make Part 4 as easy as possible, I wrote the pattern in such a way that all color changes are made similarly.

Colors are always changed when completing slip stitch when two cells of different colors “meet” (pic 1) or when you need to change yarn on the edge. Holding both yarns behind work, insert the hook into space of next cell and complete slip stitch with new yarn (pic 2). Tighten previous yarn (pic 3). Now continue to work new cell with new yarn. Isn’t it easy?!

A very important thing you should always keep in mind while following the pattern is that C2C Panels are joined to the wrap’s “body” with join-as-you-go method.

To join as-you-go you will attach C2C panel to main body of the wrap with slip stitches in the beginning or end of EVERY row. While attaching panel to the body of the wrap, you will skip one OR two stitches on the last row of the body. The rows of the panel on which you will skip only ONE stitch are marked with red dots in the chart. When joining the rest of the Rows you will skip TWO sts on the body of the wrap.

That sounds veeery tricky. I know! But don’t worry. Just follow the pattern row by row and you will understand the idea. You may ask why should you skip one or two stitches on the body? Why not to always skip one or always two stitches? The answer is very simple: C2C panel should match the body perfectly in size. I tried different ways of designing this part. But it was getting either too wide, or too narrow. And the final version you will see – works the best (trust me)!

Here are colorways for Spirit of the Lake, Spirit of the Volcano and Spirits of the Orchid wraps:

  1. This is the first time I've participated in a CAL and I'm loving it! I'm a bit behind, just now finishing up my fourth square from week 3 (work and life are getting in the way of being caught up, grrrrr, hahaha), but I'm really enjoying this!

Thank you Tatsiana for an amazing pattern and all the hard work you put into the very detailed, easy-to-follow instructions, and the awesome videos! The videos are key and really help answer some very important questions as I work through each section.

  2. Hello from Finland :) This is my first CAL and I'm loving it so far. Thank you for it. I can't find the Finnish translation for part 4.. Is it coming?

    1. Hello, yes Finnish translation should be ready soon. It's a bit delayed...

  3. Hi Tatsiana, just a note on the written instructions. Once the full number of cells is reached (e.g. at the end of row 9 and subsequent odd rows) there is a slip stitch in the chain 3 space of the next cell before the turn. This is in the video but not in the written instructions. The same omission occurs in the part 5 instructions.

Otherwise, I am finding the written instructions very easy to follow and am loving the Spirit of the Lake color way!

    1. Hi Sgrehome, I am not really sure what exactly you mean. Instructions for Row 9 and next odd rows say: "turn, ch3, ss in ch3-sp of same cell" and it should bring you to the starting point of next row... what in particular you think is wrong?

    2. Hi Tatsiana, according to what I see in the video, there is a slip stitch just before the turn which is not indicated in the written instructions. Turning after the last cell (in other words, after the last double crochet) leaves a gap between that row and the previous row.

    3. Oh yes, now I see what you mean! I give complete and detailed instructions for several first rows and then to make written text shorter I only refer to "cells". SS is not mentioned not only in the end of odd rows, but in the middle of the rows as well. I ask to complete 5-6-7 cells, and I thought it might feel natural that all cells are joined with ss... I am sorry for confusion. I can change both files in English, but it's impossible to correct all translations. I believe this minor thing is not critical for understanding of the pattern (especially with available video). But thank you for mentioning! :)

    4. You're welcome! I only mentioned it in case you plan to publish the pattern at some point. :-)
