Welcome to our annual festive mystery make-a-long! To be honest, this year I wasn’t sure I would have the time or creative capacity to host it, as we’ve been completely snowed under with packing and shipping the City Walk book pre-orders. But now that all the books are on their way to their new loving homes—and because so many of you kept asking about the mystery MAL—I finally decided to take on the challenge. So… please welcome the Mystery Sparkle Make-A-Long (MAL)!
If you’ve followed my work for a while, you already know that mystery MALs have become a lovely tradition. This year’s event will actually be the sixth in a row!
As with last year, I decided to create small festive projects that can become cute decorations for your home or last-minute gifts for your friends.
What the Mystery Sparkle MAL Includes
The Mystery Sparkle MAL features 4 brand-new, exclusive patterns that have never been published before. And because I always try to teach something new through my designs, each project focuses on a different crochet technique: overlay crochet, brioche crochet, surface crochet, and short-rows crochet.
The projects are small but engaging—perfect for giving you a gentle introduction to techniques you may not have tried before. And by making several items from the same pattern, you’ll have the chance to really master your new skills.
Every pattern comes with:
- Full written instructions in English (US crochet terms)
- A detailed photo tutorial
- A video tutorial
You’ll have everything you need for success!
Where to Find the Patterns
The Mystery Sparkle MAL has not started yet, and pre-orders are open now on Ravelry HERE.
The ebook is available at a reduced price through December 2025. After the MAL ends, all patterns will be released individually, and the ebook price will increase.
When you purchase the ebook now, you will receive a file introducing the MAL, but no patterns will be delivered yet.
- The first pattern will appear in your Ravelry library on December 5th, 2025.
- A new pattern will be revealed every Friday around 3pm CET.
- The final pattern will be published on December 26th. Simply refresh your library each week to access the new releases.
Please note: The Mystery Sparkle MAL ebook is available only on Ravelry at this time. If you prefer buying patterns on Etsy, the individual patterns will become available there after December 26th, 2025. Etsy doesn’t support mystery ebooks or adding new files to a bundle week by week—hence the delay.
What You Will Need
To join the Mystery Sparkle MAL, you will need to purchase the ebook to access all four patterns. The name of the MAL was inspired by the new Scheepjes Catona Shine yarn, which has beautiful sparkles and is perfect for festive crochet.
I chose several Catona Shine colors and combined them with regular Catona shades—ten colors in total—but each project uses only a small amount of yarn. You can mix and match your own colors to create many beautiful combinations and make multiple decorations.
You can find Catona and Catona Shine at your local Scheepjes retailer.
If you are in the US or Canada, be sure to visit Taemombo Yarn Shop—Laura has put together adorable kits with carefully curated colors for this MAL. I’m sure you’ll find one you love!
Pattern Support
Official pattern support will be available in my Facebook group HERE, where we look forward to seeing your progress pictures and answering your questions! Join our friendly community of over 38K members. Please note: you will need to answer a simple question when signing up. Without an answer, your request cannot be approved.
Hope you join—and enjoy! I can’t wait to share the first pattern with you!
UPDATE: All 4 patterns has been published already and you can find them here:
Welcome to Week 4 of the One Evening Mystery make-a-long. Time flies fast, and we are on the last part of the MAL already. In the previous three weeks we made a mug wrap, a colorful bauble, a fragile snowflake. And this week we will be making a coaster in a beloved brioche crochet technique.
If you purchased the MAL listing on Ravlery, the last pattern has already landed to your library, and you can download the instructions (again, there will be 2 files available for download, with one of them containing detailed progress pictures).
And if you do not own the patterns yet, but would like to join, you can grab your copy on Ravelry HERE and newly on Etsy HERE.
And if you would like to make even more small and cute hanging ornaments, check out an e-book with 7 patterns HERE on our website.
One Evening Coaster is a compact design with a practical ridge preventing glasses and cups from sliding off the coaster. It is small, but also big enough to get a nice introduction into the brioche crochet technique, with a helpful video tutorial accompanying the pattern.
And except of learning the technique, you will also get a chance to practice making modified crochet clusters. For a better result, choose a light and dark color for the center of the coaster, with a bright accent color for the last rounds.
And make a set of several coasters by switching placement of the colors for each new motif.
Brioche has been one of my most favourite crochet techniques over the last couple of years. If you want to check more patterns in this wonderful technique, have a look at my Brioche Masterclass HERE.
To hide the back side of the coasters, you can optionally sew a piece of felt to the bottom of them. Or you can turn them into hanging double-sided ornaments by making two circles in joining them together with some stuffing inside.
And of course, the beads will add a final festive touch. I sew the beads only along the last rounds of the coaster to keep the centre flat, as I am going to use those as coasters.
Hope you enjoyed the One Evening Mystery make-a-long.
See you next year with the new adventures.
Festive season is just around the corner. In these unsure and dark covid days, with lockdowns in many countries in the world our winter holidays will probably not be the same as they used to be. Many of us stay at home and don’t see our loved ones often. But still it doesn’t mean we can’t cheer ourselves up. Crochet is a powerful tool. Both for the mind and for the soul. We can create small and cute little things to decorate our homes and give them away to our family and friends. Today I am happy to announce a Not a Christmas Mystery CAL (crochet-a-long).
I called it “Not a Christmas” because Christmas is not here yet, and also because not everyone celebrates it. But nice crochet decorations will add a festive touch to every home.
And “mystery” means you will not know what will be coming before actual release. I thought I would host this CAL as one big surprise :-D
The crochet-a-long will start next week, when the first part will be revealed on my blog and Ravelry. The CAL will run for 4 weeks, with a new pattern coming out every Friday. So totally we will make four decorations (or presents).
Every pattern will use a different crochet technique (overlay, tapestry, brioche and mosaic). The decorations will be small and doable in just one week. But of course you can create many more using the patterns.
WHAT
Four crochet patterns for festive home decorations in different crochet techniques: mosaic, overlay, brioche and tapestry. Great chance to learn something new and join fellow crocheters for online celebration.
WHEN
Not a Christmas Mystery CAL will begin next week, on Friday November 20th, 2020. And then every new pattern will be released on a weekly basis.
WHO
Everyone who loves crochet, knows basic stitches and wants to learn something new.
HOW
This CAL is a paid one and will run on Ravelry only. I know many of you are used to Etsy, but unfortunately this platform doesn’t allow adding the files with automatic update.
To participate in the CAL you will need to purchase instructions on Ravelry HERE.
The CAL has not started yet, and a pre-order is running right now. First pattern will be added to your Ravelry library next Friday, on November 20th, 2020. The patterns will be offered at a reduced price during the CAL through December 31, 2020 and then will be updated to a full price.
Official support for this CAL will be offered in my Facebook group HERE where I will be happy to see all your pictures! Join now our friendly community with 22K+ members. Please, be aware that you will have to answer a simple question upon a sing up. Without answering it your request will not be approved.
WHAT YOU NEED
To participate in the Not a Christmas Mystery CAL you will need yarn, hook, and your happy mood :) I have opened my Scheepjes Catona pack with 100+ mini skeins (10g each).

Those tiny babies are perfect for small crochet projects. And you also have lots of colors to choose from and to combine. Every pattern will use just 2-5 skeins (10g). Some of them will use just leftovers from previous skeins.
If you don’t plan to make many decorations, then 15-20 x10g skeins in different contrasting colors will be enough. You will also need 3 mm and 3.5 mm crochet hook, yarn needle, a button, scissors and stuffing. And beads (optional). Everything will be revealed during the CAL.
Scheepjes Catona cutie packs as well as individual skeins (in 10g, 25g and 50g) are available in your local Scheepjes shops and via online retailers:
Wool Warehouse* and Black Sheep Wools* (both in UK, international shipping)
Caro's Atelier* (NL, Europe)
Taemombo (US and Canada)
This is all for now!
Hope to see you in a week.

Introduction
Although this fantastic blanket was designed by Jessica Wifall, this project is precious for me personally as a designer in several ways.
First of all, because my own pattern – Dandelion Border – was used as a part of this design.
Secondly, because Baby Henry’s Heirloom Afghan is based on the Overlay Crochet Mandala No 6 by Carola Herbst of CAROcreated. My own designing journey began 5 years ago with overlay crochet mandalas. I bought one of the Carola’s designs on Etsy, made my first ever overlay crochet mandala, and fell in love with this technique.
Over a hundred designs have been created since then, but I remember very well how it all started. And I can’t thank Carola enough for giving me a huge source of inspiration and confidence in my own designing skills.

And thirdly, this CAL is special for me because it also uses a part of Sophie’s Universe blanket designed by my dearest friend Dedri Uys of Look At what I Made. I was very lucky to become a part of Scheepjes Bloggers team, meet Dedri and make friends with her in real life. She is my forever crochet mentor.
As you have guessed already, Baby Henry’s Designer Heirloom Afghan CAL incorporates three patterns from different designers: Overlay Crochet Mandala No 6 by Carola, Sophie’s Universe Part 4 by Dedri and Dandelion Border by me. Two of these patterns including mine are paid, so to join the CAL you will need to purchase them, either on Ravelry or Etsy.
Jessica Wifall put all three patterns together (and I can’t believe she could adapt mandala pattern so well!) and wrote her own notes which are available as a free download (HERE or HERE).

Yarn and Colorways
There are no official yarn packs for this CAL. You can either use your stash or buy the yarn in separate skeins.
Baby Henry’s Heirloom Designer Afghan comes in three colorways. The original was made with Catona yarn by Scheepjes (100% cotton sport weight yarn) and 3mm hook.

The size of the finished blanket will depend on the yarn and hook you use and also on your personal crochet style. Jessyca’s afghan turned out 114cm/45”.
You can purchase Catona yarn in local Scheepjes shops or via online retailers (affiliate links are marked with *): Wool Warehouse* (UK, international shipping), Black Sheep Wools* (UK, international shipping), Caro’s Atelier* (NL and Europe), Knotty House* (Canada), Taemombo* (Canada and US).

Another colorway is called Henry’s Voyage. It also uses Catona yarn, but in fewer colors:

Champaign (248) – 8 x 50g balls
Light Navy (164) – 8 x 50g balls
Dark Olive (387) – 6 x 50g balls
And you can also choose your own colors. To help you visualize the look of the finished blanket, the organizers have created colouring pages for you. Print them out, take the pencils and color your own blanket in any palette you like.

Techniques
This Afghan pattern uses overlay crochet technique. If you have never tried it, the patterns might be a bit difficult to read and follow, at first. But after you are used to the pattern style, everything will become smoother.
All three patterns contain heavy photo-tutorials with loads of progress high quality pictures.
If you are still unsure, please check general information about overlay crochet HERE on my blog. And practice with one or two squares from Circles of the Sun CAL.
Timeline
Baby Henry’s Designer Heirloom Afghan crochet-a-long will begin on August 1st, 2019 and will run for 16 weeks, with parts being released weekly on a Thursday. Enjoy!

This pattern was scheduled for an early January, but everyone was celebrating holidays (including translating teams). And I only started to receive translations now. Not all of them are ready yet. But missing files should be added very soon.
So what was the metal ring/hoop for? I know many of you were guessing it could be a dream catcher. But it’s not. :) It’s just a small mandala wall hanging. If you have lots of yarn left, you can add some crocheted feathers, and beads. And turn your mandala into a kind of a dream catcher. That’s absolutely up to you.
Add this pattern to your Ravelry Queue
Spirit Mandala is very simple and is worked up really fast. No intricate stitches were used here, but you have a chance to practice popcorns. I recommend to use 3.25mm Amour Clover crochet hook but you may want to use a smaller one (or crochet tight) to make your mandala match the size of the hoop.
I mixed both Spirit and Catona yarns for a faded effect. And I’ve completed all three mandalas. One of them found its place in my window.

Today, when release is launched, I can finally announce that Spirits of Life CAL is officially finished. YAY! It was a long and exciting journey, and I would like to use this opportunity to thank all wonderful people who were helping me along the way:
- My wonderful testers Hilde Tindlund, Cindy Douglass, Lori Baran, Kathy Mant and Susan Cutler Cutrer, who spent lots of time searching for errors and helping to polish the pattern.
- Massiel Lago and all amazing translating teams!! I can’t name everyone but I know that more than 40 people were working to bring translations of this CAL to life!
- Nikki Willis and other admins of Official CCC Social group on Facebook who were always in touch trying to answer all the questions and help you out.
- Esther Dijkstra of It’s All In A Nutshell whi inspired me to choose yarns for this CAL and who taught me how to create and upload video’s. Thanks to Esther I have my own YouTube channel now!
- Scheepjes for sponsoring this CAL and putting together official kits (they are still available for purchase via Wool Warehouse* (UK, international shipping)
- My Scheepjes bloggers friends (Our Tribe) for support and inspiration.
And of course I would like to thank all of you who joined me for this adventure. Who didn’t give up, managed to break through jungles of crochet techniques. And who finished their Spirit of Life wraps.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I hope you will enjoy the mandala pattern. And if you still have lots of yarn left you can probably make a matching pillow in C2C technique. Check my tutorial HERE.

Last week was very relaxed I hope. And today’s border is very simple, too. It consists of only rounds with single and double crochet stitches (US terms) and almost no counting is involved. So after you finish first round you can grab a cup of tea and continue with the pattern watching your favourite TV shows.
Why do I mention first round? Because on that round you will work evenly around entire wrap (it should be blocked already). I know many people I scared by “work evenly” instructions. To make it easier for you, I have given exact stitch count for every part of the wrap. So first round is broken into smaller sections, and hopefully it will be easy to be on track.
Please, note that my stitch count is perfect for the size and gauge given in the pattern. If your gauge was different, you might need to improvise a bit. The main rule is that your border must not ruffle. And it should not be pulling, too.
In case you don’t have enough yarn to finish the border as per pattern – don’t worry. You can absolutely join a new color in the middle of the round and continue to work with it. I would say different colors of yarn in the same round will make your wrap look very authentic.

**Errata** in some translations it was written to join Yarn F in the final stitch. It was an error. Please, make first round of the border with Yarn H :)

If you purchased an official Scheepjes kit you might be curious what is the metal ring for. And now I can tell you! It’s for a bonus pattern – a mandala wall hanging – which will be made with leftovers. The mandala design is created already and will be put to test this week. But since many of you are behind with the CAL and Christmas is almost here, I thought I would release bonus pattern early in January. When everyone will be back from holidays, fresh and ready for the new challenges!
Are you making this wrap for yourself or as a gift? :) I would love to hear from you in comments!!

This week’s instructions are short. You know so much already and I am not sure what else I can add.
The only important thing I would like to draw your attention to is yardages! I know that many of you were very careful and precise, and you checked yardages after each new part of the CAL was finished. But some of you preferred to live dangerously. :)
If you are not very much on track with yardages and you feel like you are running out of some colors, don’t worry! We can fix it this week and hopefully you will not need to order additional skeins of yarn.
Part 8 is more or less the same as very first week of the CAL. We will be making colorful stripes again with a tiny touch of overlay crochet. I used a certain order of colors for my wraps, but it’s not really necessary to follow it exactly. If you run out of some shades, please, feel free to replace the colors according to your taste. It will not have a great impact on the final look of your wrap.
