Hello and welcome to Week 4 of Rozeta CAL! We have finished tapestry mandala last week and today will move to something new. Todays part is easier in some way, as we will only use one color per round. But don’t relax too much :) You’ll need to concentrate and count the stitches well. But hey, haven’t we counted with tapestry already.
I am in Utrecht right now, typing from a hotel room and watching calm October evening through my window. No wind, no rain, a little bit of sun. And beautiful colorful trees. Autumn is here. Just the way I like it.
It’s Monday now but I decided to prepare this blog post in advance as I will most likely not have time tomorrow and on Wednesday. I’ll be at Kreadoe – one of the biggest craft shows in the Netherlands. If you are there as well, make sure to stop by at the Scheepjes stand and say Hello. We will have Rozetas on display! I know you have your own already, but just in case you would like to see them for real and maybe squish them a little bit?..
Today’s part of the Rozeta CAL is about texture. Not too much, but just to warm you up before a massive overlay border begins. We’ll try a kind of overlay crochet technique, and hopefully by the end of the week you will feel skilled, comfortable and confident.
As already mentioned, we’ll only use one color per round. It means there will be no inner yarn you can pull to adjust the tension and keep your mandala flat (I know some of you did this with tapestry). So please, adjust your gauge as you go, compare your yarn amounts to the numbers given in the pattern. And switch to a bigger or smaller hook if needed.
The basic rule is: your mandala should remain flat and “perfectly” round!

Round 36. Nothing special happens here. Just a simple round with dc stitches (US terms here and throughout the tutorial)
Round 37. Here is the first tricky place. We will be making FPtr stitches and they should be vertical. To keep them straight, please, always choose the stitch lying a little bit forward from the current one. It may feel, like this stitch is too far, but when you complete FPtr, you will see it’s just the right one!
FPtr will NOT be 100% vertical. But your task is to keep them “more or less” vertical. In the picture below you’ll see an example of the wrong placement. This is what you are trying to avoid.
And don’t forget to skip the stitches of the previous round behind FPtr just made.
Round 38. A simple one. Please, mark all increases. You’ll need these markers to correctly align the stitches from the next round.
Round 39. And here you’ll see why we marked the increases. If you have no increase (marker), then make 5sc. If you are passing the marker – then make 6sc. Easy like that. Remove markers in the end of this round.
Round 40. Another simple round, and again mark all increases as you make them.
Round 41. After this round (and on next rounds) you will be turning you work in the end of every round, alternating work on right and back sides. To help yourself stay on track, please always mark the last stitch of the round before joining. If you mark it, you will clearly see where the first stitch of the next round will go.
Round 42. Continue with Yarn A. You marked the last stitch on the previous round and turned your work. Now you are working on the wrong side. Follow instructions for this round and again – mark last stitch of the round before joining and turning.
TIP: to make the join more invisible, when joining the rounds on the wrong side, insert the hook from back to front.
Round 43. On this round we are starting to build the base for the wide textured border. And correct stitch placement is very important for this round. Make sure your first sc goes in the last (marked) dc of the previous round. And try to keep all your FPtr straight and vertical again.
Round 44. You are working on the wrong side. Mark all increases on this round.
Yay! You are done! Congratulations! And see you next week.
