Grinda MAL is slowly moving to its end, and today is week 4 already! Thank you very much for posting pictures of your beautiful creations. Many shawls have been finished already, but I also know that many of you follow the MAL week by week. Today’s Part 4 is about hearts. The hearts symbolizing love for small Grinda island in Stockholm Archipelago.
Grinda island is situated further in the sea, but still not too far for a one-day trip. Depending on the ferry schedule you can get there in just two hours. And then many more hours to enjoy silent walks in the woods and among huge stones, listening to the sea and being just yourself.

Our sea journey continues and Part 2 of Grinda MAL is here. We have left the Stockholm city and our boat is heading to the open sea. The boat was a bit slow while sailing along the city vein between old charming buildings. But now when the city is left behind the speed is faster and we can enjoy fresh wind playing with the hair.
Whether you are sitting on a wooden bench inside the boat or standing on the open deck outside, you can enjoy the magical sea view. And honestly I have never seen anything like this before.
Stockholm Archipelago consists of numerous islands of different sizes and shapes. Some of them are as small as, I don’t know, a playground maybe? With just one house, several trees and a boat parked in the waves. These tiny islands look especially fragile when huge ferries are passing by. And there are lots and lots of them.
Part 2 of Grinda shawl repeats the same lace pattern as in previous part, but with textured popcorns, symbolizing tiny islands in the open sea :)

Whether you are sitting on a wooden bench inside the boat or standing on the open deck outside, you can enjoy the magical sea view. And honestly I have never seen anything like this before.
Stockholm Archipelago consists of numerous islands of different sizes and shapes. Some of them are as small as, I don’t know, a playground maybe? With just one house, several trees and a boat parked in the waves. These tiny islands look especially fragile when huge ferries are passing by. And there are lots and lots of them.
Part 2 of Grinda shawl repeats the same lace pattern as in previous part, but with textured popcorns, symbolizing tiny islands in the open sea :)

Welcome to Grinda MAL! As you probably know this design was inspired by a boat trip to Stockholm Archipelago we took together with my husband last summer (read full story HERE). If you visit Stockholm, going out to the sea is a must-do. Not only because a boat trip offers a nice change from the city life. But because it’s a small adventure itself. And the sea scenery with small islands is amazing.
Stockholm Archipelago is a group of islands situated together in a kind of a cluster. And they are as many as tens of thousands! Every island is different in size and shape. Some of them are larger and thus have become city suburbs linked to the mainland with bridges and ferries. For tourists taking a ferry out to the sea is a part of relaxed sightseeing. And for many local people it’s just another, very convenient, way to get to work, for example.
Ferries leave regularly in small intervals. And tickets are available at the boat station. Each ferry has its own name, which I find very charming. So today we are leaving Stockholm and take the boat to the islands. Take your seat (preferably outside to enjoy fantastic sea views), breath out, order a cup of tasty coffee and get your hook and Whirl ready. Our adventure begins… now!

Full Reveal
Last week sneaks peeks and the story behind Grinda shawl were published, and I am grateful for the love your gave this design. Even without seeing a full reveal. But today I will finally show it to you, and I hope you will not be disappointed.
As you can see, Grinda shawl is a pretty simple and straightforward design. Each part represents something connected to the sea and islands, and I will tell you a new story every week. I wanted to play with filet crochet, but to create a filet fabric in a little bit different way.
I made three samples in total. One of them uses just one cake of Whirl 769 Blackberry Mint Chip. This is a small version of Grinda shawl. And if you choose to make it, you should be very careful with the gauge not to run out of the yarn.
My second sample uses Woolly Whirl 472 Sugar Sizzle and Whirlette 854 Blueberry. I couldn’t find a 100% matching Whirlette, and just took a similar colour. Even though the gradient colour change is not smooth, the shawl still looks very organic. And this is also an example of extended, or plus-size shawl.

And my third sample was made with three different Whirlettes: 852 Frosted, 860 Ice, 865 Chewy. I had lots of leftovers, but not enough in one color to make a full extension of the shawl. So I decided to make a fringe instead.

Materials
Yarn. Grinda Shawl uses one cake of Whirl (or Woolly Whirl, or Frosted Whirl) yarn by Scheepjes. Depending on the gauge and personal crochet style more yarn can be required to complete the shawl. To be on the safe side it is recommended to add one cake of Whirlette yarn in matching color. Leftovers can be used for a shawl extension (given in the pattern) or a fringe. Solid version of Grinda Shawl uses three cakes of Whirlette (see above).

Yay! I have been secretly working on a new design for almost a year, and today is the day! I can finally show you sneak peeks and proudly announce there will be a new MAL (make-a-long) coming soon. This design was inspired by my trip to Stockholm last summer. Or, to be precise, by a boat trip to Stockholm archipelago. My new shawl is named Grinda which means “gate” in Norwegian, but it’s also the name of a small island in two hours by boat from Stockholm.

To say I love the sea means to say nothing. I LOVE the sea. And I desperately need to come to the sea at least once a year. To breathe out, to relax, to find way back to myself. Without these short trips I don’t know how I could live… I secretly hope one day, when I am not busy anymore, when I don’t have to take care of anything, when I am (probably) retired – I will move to the sea to live in a small house near the beach, and to be able watching the sea from my small window. Every single day. My sea should be cold, and grey. With pale yellow sun reflected in the waves…
Every year in the summer me and my husband try to take some days off to travel. Last year we spent a week in Stockholm. It was in July, and the weather was not “summery” at all. Lots of clouds and raining. Just perfect for me! :) It was a bit boring to wander in the city streets under the rain, and we decided to take a boat trip to Stockholm archipelago.
To save as much as possible on the flight I only was allowed to bring hand luggage on the plane. And to fit 8kg I packed only one cake of Whirl. To occupy myself during long hours in the trains, at the airport and on the plane.
I took my Whirl to boat trip, too. And apparently a new shawl design started growing in my hands. Inspired by small islands, Grinda’s nature and magic sea views…
I took lots of pictures on Grinda and other islands. Browsing these pictures fill my heart with precious memories. And today I invite you to join me on a virtual boat trip. Perhaps, you love the sea as much as I do. Or this design will mean something else to you. But anyway I hope you will enjoy it.
Grinda MAL will officially begin on July 11th, 2018 when first part of the pattern will be released on my blog. The pattern will be FREE and new instructions will be released weekly. There will be five parts in total.
